My Wish List for Summer

Puddle Portraits
A fun-filled portrait series featuring individuals sitting, standing, stomping, splashing & otherwise styling in a puddle.  Looking for a variety of looks, ages, genders, species and attitudes.  Wardrobe is whatever the model is comfortable getting soaked.  As you can see from the sample here, I was comfortable in a pair of denim shorts, button front shirt, red suspenders & straw hat.  You may prefer swimwear, slacks, shorts, skirts, undies or even your birthday suit.  Subjects will pose with umbrellas, hoodies, baseballs, lunch boxes, brooms – whatever comes to mind – and lit clearly.  Ideally sessions will be shot immediately after rain passes, but perhaps not all…

Whispers
This series features two or more subjects, one whispering in the other’s ear.  These will be color images, shot against a dark background, lit with a homemade softbox above the subjects aimed at a large reflector below.  I may or may not use a 2nd light behind the subjects to add a bit of separation from the background.  All ages are welcome from kids to grands.

Tails From the Glam Side…
A celebration of the female butt as seen by a glamour/pinup shooter, whether clad in denim, satin, thongs, bikini bottoms, spandex or deliciously bare, it’s all about dat butt…
This one is for you adult ladies with the killer bottoms, and yeah, there’s gonna be some nudity involved.  Nothing too far over the top, but if this doesn’t fall in your comfort zone, then it’s best to pass it by…

     A.:  Bottomless model, back to camera, wearing leather jacket, denim jacket, sweater, hoodies, T-shirt, halter, etc.

     B.:  Topless model “sunning” herself in bikini bottoms/thong – hiding breasts from view w/assorted props (lollypops, hat, Frisbee, etc.)

Selective Color: A Sexy Celebration…
Selective Coloring is a technique that goes in and out of style fairly regularly.  Most recently “Frank Miller’s Sin City” used the technique with great success.  Shot entirely in Black & White, certain parts of each scene were rendered in bright colors, usually Red.  Lips, Car Finishes, Gym Shoes, etc.

I want to shoot each scene in high contrast Black & White, with one, maybe 2 objects (lips, shoes, handbag, necktie, tomatoes, whatever) in bright, bright primary colors.

Ladies – we’re looking for sexy here: lingerie, short shorts, lots of cleavage & legs, bright lipstick, etc.
Men – we’re looking for sexy from you too:  jeans & a white tank to full on pimp suit to romance detective suits

Props to suit the mood and fit the scene…

Batter Up! Revisited...

Take a pretty girl;
Dress her in short shorts, a low cut blouse, heels & baseball cap;
Add  a glove, bat & generous supply of baseballs;
Gently fold in a generous portion of sunshine & pour into a suitable Field of Dreams;
Include one slightly demented photographer and turn up the summer time heat…
Yield:  One incredibly sassy, non-nude, baseball themed pinup session!

Goals/Intentions
I started Batter Up! back in 2007, intending to create my very first ever pinup calendar.  I managed to shoot just 5 of 12 sets before winter came crashing in with typical disregard.

After a somewhat lengthier delay (cough, cough) than anticipated, it’s time to blow the dust off this project and get it back on track.  So, come the warm weather, I’d like to reboot the project and start shooting for a new calendar...

Model Requirements
1.)    Models  must be of legal age to contract in their own name;
2.)    Models must sign my model release;
3.)    Models must provide a copy of your State issued photo ID.

Wardrobe
The Look we’re shooting for is fun, flirty, light hearted & very sassy.  We want to tease the fans, so lots of flirting, but no full on blatant nudity…

Nothing too terribly outrageous needed.  Short shorts (“Daisy Dukes”) or Mini/Tennis skirt with a tight Tank, Halter, or a button-front blouse over brightly colored bra/bikini top.

And heels, too, of course…  Heels are ALWAYS a good idea…

The “N” Word, Nudity
There is absolutely NO nudity, full or implied, in this project.

Compensation
This is a “Trade Shoot.”  Participating models will receive up to 10 fully edited image files for their own use.  I will supply both full sized printable image files and low resolution web display versions.

Location
‘Batter Up!’ sessions will all be conducted “on location.” In this particular case, we will be shooting on a baseball field.  If there is a suitable field convenient to your home, I’m happy to shoot you there.  Otherwise, we’ll be shooting on a field of my choice.

We'll settle on where exactly when we schedule your session.

Escort Policy
I allow my models a single escort/companion on set when shooting, providing I'm told ahead of time.  Chances are I may put your escort to work holding reflectors or moving lights and/or props.

I hate to have to mention it, but experience is a harsh teacher, so...

...I expect and require everyone present to behave at all times.  Adults should be able to discuss any and all issues arising during a shoot without resorting to name calling, threats of violence and similar displays of teenage angst.  This ain’t high school.  I have
zero tolerance for pointless “High School Drama” when shooting.

Should things become ”tense,” the session will be terminated, all images captured to that point deleted, and if necessary the Police will be summoned.  And yes, I will press charges to the full extent allowed under the law.  Life is just too short for childish nonsense…

Celebrate The Day

Hug Your Cat Day
Celebrate The Day is a 365 Photo Project with a bit of a twist.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, and in defense of my project, that’s why I added a twist.  I have no intention of taking a Project photo every single day for the full 365 days.  No no no no no and again, no!  I have something else entirely in mind…

What I want to do is shoot a collection – or series, if you prefer – consisting of of 365 separate “holiday” images.  I know, and I know you know, that each day of the year has been set aside to honor/celebrate a separate concept.  January, for example, celebrates not only New Year’s Day, but also Polar Bear Swim Day, Curmudgeon Day, Apricot Day, Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day and Rubber Ducky Day.  Among others.

With “Celebrate The Day” I intend to create 365 separate images to honor those lesser known holidays.  And just to keep things interesting, I’m going to mix things up a bit.  The collection will include a variety of imagery, ranging from still life and product imagery to editorial, glamour, fashion, pinup & even some art nude model shots.  There will also be some fantasy images created using Photoshop.  Color, B&W, serious, beautiful, humorous, but most of all, FUN!

Care to join me?  Here’s a few things you’ll need to know:

Goals/Intentions
My goal is quite simple.  I want to create 365 beautiful images that will be seen, enjoyed and perhaps brighten some lives with some smiles.  Which, of course, requires publishing the Collection in some manner.  Clearly I intend to publish, but with “Celebrate The Day” being a work in progress, I’m still debating format.  A book is a strong possibility.  A calendar?  Possibly.  There are other possibilities I’m considering as well.

Peculiar People Day
Model Requirements
This is an “equal opportunity” project.  All models (male, female, other…) are welcome.  All models must sign my commercial release and provide a photo ID demonstrating you to be of legal age to do so.  Moms and Dads, your children are also welcome, but you must be prepared to sign a commercial release on their behalf as well.

The “N” Word
Some sessions will include and/or require some nudity.  “Working Naked Day” comes to mind; there are others.  At this point, I’m thinking most of the shoots requiring skin will be Implied Glamour Nudes, rather than full frontal Art Nudes.  In any event, it is my firm policy that I will shoot nudes only after having discussed the matter fully with the model.  If we haven’t discussed it before our session, we won’t be shooting skin.

Wardrobe
Your attire is entirely dependent on the concept we will be shooting.

Wardrobe appropriate to “Ice Cream For Breakfast Day” is likely going to be different from that workable for “Step in a Puddle & Splash a Friend Day” and will certainly not be appropriate to “Working Naked Day.”

So, we’ll decide WHAT we’re shooting & plan your attire accordingly.  Fair enough?

Compensation
This project is being conducted on a Trade basis.  I offer all participants their choice of 10 fully edited image files ready for printing as well as a matching set of low resolution web display formats suitable for your Facebook…

Science Fiction Day
Escorts
You may bring an escort to our session, but I expect and require you to advise me prior to our shoot day.  Failure to extend that simple courtesy may result in the shoot being cancelled on the spot.  I cannot stress strongly enough how much I loathe surprises…

Miscellaneous Stuff
The world is my studio – which means, in plain text that I do not have a studio of my own.  All of my model shoots are conducted “on location.”  That location may be as public as a City Park or as private as a motel room or your own home.  Just depends…

I do not use commercial studio lighting.  I am an accomplished “available light” shooter, but am not above using “speedlight” style flash units with and without reflectors, soft boxes, light grids and other modifiers.  It works for me…

Umbrella Day
Again, depending on concept & content, session length will change from shoot to shoot.  I’ve had model shoots last as little as 30 minutes and others run all day.  I can give you an estimate when we’ve determined which concept we’ll be shooting…

DISCLAIMER

I do not tolerate "high school drama" on my shoots.  I go into each and every session with the full expectation that I am working with adults fully capable of discussing any and all issues that may arise.  Name calling, threats of violence and similar nonsense will result in the session's immediate termination and the deletion of all images taken to that point.  If necessary, I will call the police and press charges to the full extent allowable under the law.

The Anonymous Nude

"There is nothing quite as erotic as a bare naked mystery..."  No clue who said it.  Hell, it may even have been me; I have been known to wax poetic in the wee hours of the night.

Regardless, welcome to my newest project, "The Anonymous Nude."  Here, I seek to collaborate with women and men who revel in both the allure of a Mystery & the creation of Fine Art...

Concept/Intentions/Goals
It's long been a theory of mine (and others) that being 'naked' is not necessarily erotic nor beautiful.  It simply denotes a lack of clothing, & quite possibly poor judgment, depending on the environment - a snowbank, for example…

…although shooting a nude in a snowbank does have some wonderful Fine Art possibilities.  Which is neither here nor there; another time.  Perhaps...

There is a difference between naked pictures and Fine Art Nudes.  There are even differences between Art Nudes and Art Nudes.  Don’t think so?  I suggest you look at Helmut Newton’s work.  He always shot nudes with an edge, but his focus and technique altered both subtly & blatantly as his skill matured over the decades, yet his early work is as fascinating as his most recent…

In my experience, the Nudes that truly stand out are those images that incorporate a “visual tension” into the overall capture.  It is that tension which elevates a simple “nekkid picture” to the level of “Art.”  And in far too few instances, to the level of “Fine Art.”  Creating, infusing & capturing that “visual tension” is a challenge unto its own self…

The Anonymous Nude is a celebration of “The Tension.”  The celebration, in this case, is quite literally a mystery common to every image in the Collection.  That mystery?  The assured anonymity of each subject photographed.  Though fully nude, each model will be positioned and lit so as to preserve any hint of identity from view.  Ideally, each image will be so well crafted that the viewer will not have any clue the individual standing next to him is in fact the subject of the photograph being viewed…

I intend The Anonymous Nude to be an eclectic collection of beautiful, alluring and even erotic imagery celebrating the mystery and allure of full anonymity.  When complete, I plan to publish the Collection.  Initially as a calendar, then a book, and if the fates are kind, I will eventually offer gallery quality prints for sale.

Model Requirements:
…must be of legal age to contract in your own name;
…must provide a valid copy of your state issued photo ID;
…must sign my release allowing publication;
…will be posing nude.

That’s it, the full list of requirements for participation in The Anonymous Nude.
Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, weight, body modifications, complexion, race, religion or political affiliation.

Locations
Location is a variable that will change from session to session.  Given that this is a nude project, most sessions will be conducted indoors.  Most likely in your home, a motel room, possibly a rented studio if I can find & afford the fee.

I also have a few outdoor locations in mind for the more adventurous minded.  Please let me know how adventurous you would like your session to be…

Wardrobe / Exposure
This is a nude project.  Wardrobe is NOT a concern as all models will be photographed in the nude.  That is a constant of the project.  The other constant within this project are my models’ identities.  The same devices – lighting, positioning, POV, props – that protect your anonymity will also serve to adjust exposure from fully nude to merely suggestive.

It is strongly recommended models bring a robe to slip into between shots and during breaks from shooting.

Compensation
The Anonymous Nude is being conducted as a Trade Shoot.  Participants may choose one of two compensation options.

Option 1:  Participants will receive their choice of 10 fully edited Anonymous Nude image files (in full size printable and low resolution web display formats) to include in their portfolio and/or use for self promotion;

Option2:  Participants may instead choose to schedule a second photo shoot of equal duration, the results of which will be theirs to do with as they see fit.  The type of shoot is entirely up to you.  Family portraits, fashion, editorial, swimsuit – whatever you want.  I will even include editing of up to 10 image files as part of the deal.

Miscellaneous
I am primarily an “Available Light” photographer, though I occasionally use speed lights & reflectors for fill, and the odd modifier to soften output.

My schedule is annoyingly open at present, so I am absolutely able to accommodate your busy schedule.

Experienced and first time models are both welcome to participate.  You may be assured I will work with you to capture the best possible images and make the experience as fun as possible.

Escort Policy
Models are welcome to bring a companion/escort along for moral support, costuming assistance, protection (whatever) as long as I’m told in advance.  Surprise me with an unexpected guest and the session will be cancelled immediately.  I hate surprises…

Please note:  I have zero tolerance for high school drama on my shoots.

Got a question I didn’t cover here?

Lilliputian Invasion...

Among photographers there are two schools of thought concerning image manipulation.

Puritans to the craft look askance at anyone’s use of Photo Shop (and other editors) for anything beyond minor, basic tweaking.  They feel that a true photograph should be captured in camera.  Post work in the computer or dark room is cheating, and the results are NOT to be considered photography.  There is a certain justification to this viewpoint.  Most of those holding it have invested years of their lives learning the craft; first in school, followed by an apprenticeship of sorts with established photographers before moving on to make a name for themselves.

The second school of thought, however, recognizes that progress in technology offers not only new methods for accomplishing specific tasks, but make possible entirely new viewpoints unavailable previously.  So it is with image manipulation software (PhotoShop, etc.) and digital imaging.  It’s possible to create images of bikini models hiking the Sea of Tranquility, cowboys riding wild rabbits, and to create a photo documentary of the Lilliputian Invasion…

Concept/Intentions/Goals
Ever wonder why Gulliver’s friends, The Lilliputians, never came to visit?  What if some of them did…

As you may have guessed from the intro above, my Lilliputian Invasion relies heavily on photo manipulation.  Simply put, I will be “shrinking” each model to “fit” in and around common items found in day to day life (a coffee cup, desktop computer keyboard & mouse, bathroom toiletries, etc.) with the goal of creating a “scene” that is humorous, unexpected and quite possibly though provoking.

While I do intend to eventually self-publish in Calendar and Book form, my main goal at the moment is to have fun.  And I would very much like to include you in that fun!

A partial list of some of my conceptualized scenes may be found below…

Model Requirements
Models must be living, the dead need not apply.

That’s pretty much the only requirement for participation.  Everyone is welcome, be they Male, Female, Child or Family Pet.  Models of legal age must sign my commercial release allowing publication.  In the case of minor children, a parent or legal guardian must sign the release on their behalf.

Session Locations
I’m pretty much shameless when it comes to conducting model shoots.  I’ll shoot virtually anywhere at all.  In a public park, on the street, in the model’s home, in a rented motel room.  Location will vary by session & purpose.

Wardrobe / Exposure
Wardrobe will vary from session to session, but will always be “scene appropriate.”  If we’re shooting you portraying a Cowboy or an Auto Mechanic or a French Chef, you’ll be in attire a Cowboy, Mechanic or Chef would typically wear, which does not include Armani or Speedo.

Some concept shoots (a lot of them actually) involving Female models will be of a Glamour/Pinup nature.  Not all, but a lot.  Attire will be both “scene appropriate” and discussed fully prior to shooting.  It makes life so much simpler if we’re all on the same page from the “gitgo” don’cha think?

This is NOT a nude project, though some glamour sessions may require partial or implied nudity.  If Nudity has not been discussed prior to shooting, it is NOT expected during your session.

Compensation
Lilliputian Invasion  is being conducted as a Trade Shoot.  Collaborators will receive their choice of 10 fully edited, ready to print image files from our session, or, as an alternative, you may choose one (1) composited “Lilliputian” image file, also ready to print.

Escort Policy
I allow models a single escort/companion on set when shooting, providing I'm told ahead of time the escort will be present.  (I hate surprises.)  I expect and require all individuals present (myself included) to behave as adults at all times.  At the first indication of unnecessary drama I will terminate the session & all images captured to that point, if any, will be deleted.

Miscellaneous Concerns
I do not have my own studio, nor do I employ studio lighting, per se.  All of my model shoots are “on location” sessions using available light, modified speed lights, or some combination.  If you are expecting a studio session, it most likely isn’t gonna happen here...

All model sessions are conducted during weekends & holidays only.  Weekday sessions are occasionally possible, if not very likely.  It doesn’t hurt to inquire…

Got a question I didn’t cover here? Want to schedule your session? Please let me know…

Dark Light Portraiture Series

Photography is all about light.  Capturing the light.  Taming the light.  Modifying the light.  Bending, mastering even, the light to one’s will.  There are other considerations – composition, focus, perspective, others - as well, but sans light, there is no image awaiting capture.  Lesson the first.

Most commercial photographers are driven to produce attractively lit images with a flattering balance of shadow.  Whether Portrait, Landscape or Still/Product Shot, abundant and flattering light is the Rule.

Rules – as you may remember from high school – were made to be broken.  And so it is with my Dark Light Portraiture project.  Rather than working with plentiful light, this project is about aggressively restricting light’s fall on my subjects.

This project is, in effect, an exploration of shadow.  I invite you to come adventuring with me.  Welcome to the Dark Light Portraiture Series project…

Concept/Intentions
There’s an old saying:  “A picture is worth a thousand words.”  Nowhere is this more on point than right here, right now.  I can blather on about camera settings, light angles, level of shadow, light modifiers and such for days, but none of that’s really going to make a whole lot of sense to non-photographers, so I’m gonna skip that part…

What I have in mind for this portrait series is best explained by viewing the images included throughout this post.  As you can see, the images here are edgy, the subjects lit from unconventional angles, with strong yet indirect light and aggressively restricted light.  I rely on shadow and contrast in these examples far more than “good light” to bring out the “Artistic edge” (if I may so label my efforts) I want for this project.

I’ve recently began using wireless triggers in combination with multiple speed lights in my photography and am looking forward to doing a bit of experimenting.  So far, I’ve been pleased with the results.  I’d like to continue “extending my reach” so to speak in lighting techniques…

Towards that end, it’s time to get a bit more ‘scientific’ in my methodology.  I know what’s worked thus far.  Now it’s time to see what else will work.  And how it can be improved, tweaked or otherwise altered to fit my needs.  Should be a lot of fun…

Model Requirements
This project is open to males, females, children, cats, dogs, turtles, frogs, parrots & other avian Friends as well as the neighbors & the odd coffee mug of your choice.  Put another way, anyone may participate.

Adults must be prepared to sign my commercial release and provide a copy of their state issued photo ID for my records.

Children may participate in the project with parents/guardians present only.  Said parent or guardian must sign a release on the child’s behalf as well as provide a copy of their own state photo ID for my records.
.
Cats, dogs, turtles, frogs, parrots & coffee mugs are only required to be awesome.  That is, after all, their job…

Wardrobe / Exposure
I leave wardrobe entirely up to the subject.  You may dress as you feel is appropriate.  Anything from Slacks/Blue Jeans & Shirt to “Business-wear” casual to “Puttin’ on the Ritz” formal attire will work.  It all depends on you…

The "N" Word:  Nudity
Nudity is most definitely NOT a requirement.  However (you knew there was going to be a ‘however’ coming, didn’t you?) I do intend to include some few figure studies as part of the project.

If this is of any interest to you, let me know – we’ll talk it out.  If not, forget about it…

Compensation
Dark Light Portraiture is being conducted as a Trade Shoot.  Participants may choose one of two compensation options.

Option 1:  Participants will receive their choice of 10 fully edited Dark Light image files (in full size printable and low resolution web display formats) to include in their portfolio and/or use for self promotion;

Option 2:  Participants may instead choose to schedule a second photo shoot of equal duration, the results of which will be theirs to do with as they see fit.  The type of shoot is entirely up to you.  Family portraits, fashion, editorial, swimsuit, art nudes – whatever you want.  I will even include editing of up to 10 image files as part of the deal.

Location
Location is a variable that will change from session to session.

This project is largely an experiment in controlling light, which will be simpler to manage inside than out.  If you’re comfortable shooting in your home, we can do that.  If you’d prefer not, there are alternatives…

On the other hand, part of the challenge and fun in the project comes in attempting to control natural sunlight.  I’ve a few spots in mind – parks, alleys, parking lots, playgrounds, etc. – in which we can bring the dark to the fore…

You may be assured I will work with you to capture the best possible images and make the experience as much fun as possible.

Escort Policy
Models are welcome to bring a companion/escort along for moral support, costuming assistance, protection (whatever) as long as I’m told in advance.  Surprise me with an unexpected guest and the session will be cancelled immediately.  I hate surprises…

The Monochromatic Edge Project

There was a time I considered B&W imagery far too simplistic and limited.  I don’t know about you, but my world is a veritable kaleidoscope of color in hues rich and subtle.  An endless variety of shade, tone, saturation & intensity.  Why would anyone ever choose to ignore that wondrous rich palette in favor of simplistic, limited and boring monochrome?
Completely unthinkable…

I blame the arrogant surety of youth.  It takes time to learn precisely how much one is ignorant of, and more time yet to admit it out loud.  As for wisdom?  I claim none, but happily - or perhaps sadly – the arrogance of youth no longer haunts my.  Every day I find I am more and more unsure of anything at all.  I no longer make blank assumptions or statements.  Hell, some days I can’t even remember to make sure my socks match or remember why wearing them might be a good idea….

Welcome to The Monochromatic Edge, the B&W project I swore I would never do…

Concept/Intentions
I want to create an exceptionally ambitious collection of imagery that will reach out, grab the viewer and shake said viewer by the scruff of the neck.

I intended every image to provoke an emotional response – joy, sorrow, grief, pain, fear, despair, humor, something – in each and every viewer.  I decided the best approach to achieving this lofty goal is to dial back the noise – that kaleidoscope of color I mentioned earlier - in favor of the utter clarity of Black and White simplicity.  In other words, to focus the viewer’s attention on the sharp edge of life that Black & White imagery captures so ably.

Towards that end, I wish to work with talented individuals (both in and out of the modeling community) to create and document specific “Moments” designed to provoke my viewers into responding…

Model Requirements
This project is open to males, females, children, cats, dogs and other family members – in short anyone may participate.

Adult participants must sign my Model Release and provide a copy of their state issued photo ID for my records.  A similar Model Release for minors must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.  Also, a copy of said parent’s/guardian’s state issued photo ID must be provided for my records.

Parents/Legal guardians must accompany minor children under 15 years of age while shooting.  Parents/Guardians are welcome, but not required, to accompany minor children 16 years of age & older while shooting.

The "N" Word:  Nudity
Some “Moments” captured for The Monochromatic Edge Project  will require nudity.  Please note I said “Some” and NOT “All” scenes.  Any scenes requiring nudity will be discussed fully prior to scheduling a session…

Compensation
I am conducting The Monochromatic Edge Project as a Trade Shoot:

Models will receive up to 10 fully edited image files of their choice in both full-size print ready & low resolution web display formats, to use as they see fit.

Non-models get the same deal, but may elect to schedule a family (or other) portrait session instead.

Location
Location is a variable that will change from session to session.  Playgrounds, City Parks, State Parks, a back alley, the odd corn or bean field, your own home, a motel room – just depends on what specific “scene” we are working on when we shoot.

Miscellaneous
I am primarily an “Available Light” photographer, though I do occasionally use speed lights, light modifiers & the occasional reflector from time to time.

My schedule is annoyingly open at present, so I am absolutely able to accommodate your busy schedule.

Experienced and first time models both are welcome to participate.  You may be assured I will work with you to capture the best possible images and make the experience as fun as possible.

A Few Possible Scenarios:
Family Oriented:  Paying the Bills, Family Picnic, The BBQ Party
Issue Oriented:  Street People, Days End, Jumper
Couple Oriented:  Walkabout, Engagement, Jealousy

Scenes completed so far:  The Morning After…, Serial Killer…, Bad Boy, Inc.
